Homemade Flour Tortillas

Homemade Flour Tortillas | Deco TarteletteHomemade flour tortillas are a favorite in our home. I like to use coconut oil in this recipe, especially Dr. Bronner's which has an exceptional coconut flavor going on and adds a tropical twist.Place 1 cup + 2 Tablespoons of all-purpose flour along with 1 teaspoon of salt in a food processor…pulse just a few times. Then add 1/3 cup coconut oil at room temp….pulse about 10 times. Slowly add ½ cup of cool, filtered water to the mixture while blending until the dough begins to form. The amount of water you use in this recipe will vary based on where you live, humidity levels, etc. You don't want the dough to be wet so if you add too much water, simply add a touch more flour until the dough is nice and soft. Continue to mix the dough in the food processor for about 1 minute. Sprinkle flour generously on a work surface and form the dough into a ball. Let sit at room temperature for 1 hour. Create 8 balls from the mixture (or 6 if you would like larger tortillas). Roll out with a rolling pin or if you have one, you can use a tortilla press. If using a tortilla press, I recommend placing the ball of dough between two small sheets of wax paper…..this is helpful for clean-up and is more efficient. Heat a cast iron pan over medium heat and cook the tortillas for 2 minutes on each side for the first few….you will notice that the tortillas begin cooking quite quickly once you are rolling so pay close attention. Wrap in aluminum foil to keep warm or place in a tortilla warmer. Serve immediately.Fill with all sorts of goodies: Black beans, avocado, shredded cabbage, cheddar cheese, mango salsa, and a dollop of Greek yogurt.Photo/Recipe/Styling by Cassie Winslow
