Homemade Red Wine Vinegar
More often than not, I find myself with a bottle of red wine in the fridge that has been hanging out a few days too long...so I experimented with making red wine vinegar and it was effortless...here's how you make it:Simply pour red wine into a quart-sized ball jar and add 2 tablespoons of organic, raw, unfiltered + unpasteurized apple cider vinegar. Layer a piece of cheesecloth between the glass and the lid. Secure the lid as tight as you can. Allow to sit at room temperature for a week. After use, store in the fridge. The result is a luscious, tangy, and bright vinegar. I'm sure the overall taste depends on the wine you choose to use...I used a German Pinot Noir (Spätburgunder) which is fairly light in body, peppery, and spicy. Red wine vinegar is delicious in salad dressings. You can also reduce it and pour over roasted vegetables...This would also make a lovely hostess gift...Photos + Recipe by Cassie Winslow
