Sweet + Savory Waffles
I just love making waffles...they are so easy and you can make just about any flavor combination you fancy. My favorites: Chive + Cheddar and Chamomile + Mixed Berry. These waffles are perfectly crispy on the outside and soft and chewy on the inside. I like to serve savory waffles with a poached egg and of course, drizzle sweet waffles with warm maple syrup. I hope you like waffles because it's time for a waffle party!Sweet + Savory WafflesMakes about 5-6 wafflesIngredients1 3/4 cups organic all-purpose flour1 tablespoon baking powder1/2 teaspoon salt1 3/4 cups organic whole milk2 large organic eggs1/2 cup organic melted unsalted butter, cooled slightlyAdd-ins:1 teaspoon organic chives, chopped1/4 cup grated cheddar cheese1 1/2 teaspoons organic, dried chamomile1 1/2 tablespoons organic sugarAbout 1 cup organic berries (I used blackberries and raspberries)Directions:Sift flour, baking powder, and salt into a large bowl. In a smaller bowl, whisk the milk, eggs, and melted butter. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and mix with a fork. Mix until just combined. Allow to sit for 5 minutes. Meanwhile, preheat your waffle iron (I used the Waring Belgian Waffle Maker). Cover about 3/4 of the surface of your waffle iron with batter. Add your additional ingredients immediately (if you are making sweet waffles, add about 1/2 teaspoon chamomile and 1/2 tablespoon sugar...for savory, add a pinch of chopped chives and a heaping tablespoon of grated cheddar). Bake to your liking...I typically wait until the waffle iron has ceased steaming. Serve immediately. Top the savory waffles with a poached egg and the sweet with calendula butter, fresh berries, and warm maple syrup.Use the base of this recipe for any flavor combination you'd like.
