Literary Guidance: The American Girls Handy Book
I received this book as a gift from a friend about a decade ago...the inscription read: "I thought you might get a kick out of this book" which is precisely what happened.Originally written in 1887 by two of the founders of Girl Scouting in the United States, this book guides you through each season detailing activities and crafts that can be had to entertain you throughout the year. The official title is The American Girls Handy Book~How to Amuse Yourself and Others. The illustrations are adorable as is the type throughout the book. If you are ever curious as to how to make a hammock or need assistance conjuring up inventive in-home gymnasium exercises (which includes balancing a broom handle and roll of paper on one's head), look no further...There is an entire chapter on May-Day...illustrations are featured with women dancing the May-Pole Dance commemorating the arrival of Spring. A dear friend of mine, Katie Gray, who happens to be the best tattoo artist in the land, tattooed one of the May-Pole Dancers on my ankle.Happy May~Day!
